American Academy of Sleep Medicine Physician Scientist Training Award

The American Sleep Medicine Foundation (ASMF) is pleased to announce the Physician Scientist Training Award. Physicians (MD or DO) who have completed or have been accepted for an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved sleep medicine fellowships are eligible to apply for this award. The award will support a year of research training either before or after completion of ACGME approved sleep medicine fellowship and will include research expenses such as salary support, supplies and overhead for the awardee.

Through this award, the ASMF aims to support research training for physicians who wish to pursue careers as physician scientists in sleep medicine. The ASMF will award up to five one-year grants in the amount of $75,000 each to chosen candidates for research in sleep medicine. If the applicants are on a training grant of $100,000 (total support) the ASMF will deem them ineligible for the PSTA. The award recipients will be recognized at SLEEP 2009.

A grant review committee appointed by the ASMF Executive Board will evaluate the proposals to determine the award recipients. Factors taken into consideration will include the presence of resources necessary to complete the study (including the commitment of the fellowship director/research mentor), soundness and feasibility of the research plan, and the relationship between the funds provided and expected outcomes (value for the grant).

Click here to download the application. Candidates must complete the application process before October 1, 2008. The final decision on PSTA awardees will be made by January 31, 2009.
